COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN -
Many parents know how difficult it can be to be the kind of parent they want to be. We all know that we want to be patient and loving with our children. However, it is often difficult to know how to handle various difficult and trying situations. Children are not always cooperative. They have their own mind and don’t necessarily want to do what you want them to do. They might not want to study enough, limit their electronics, or do their chores. Most parents make an initial effort to explain why it would be in their child’s best interest to do the right thing: study more, keep your room neat, help when you’re stressed out, and help parents with chores and responsibilities. But, that initial effort is normally met with resistance or argumentativeness. What must a parent do? Get sterner? Punish? Dole out time-outs? Be patient and keep explaining why they are making these requests?
Other frequent family issues involve blended families with non-biological adults attempting to parent the child or children of their partner. There are often resentments of one type or another that lead quickly to disputes over who has authority over whom and questions of fairness and favoritism.
How Can Counseling Help?
Family counseling involves the effort to sort out the best practices to deal with child-rearing and blended family issues. There are often serious disputes between parents over the role of punishment or who has what authority over which children. Counseling gives children and parents a controlled forum to explore these issues and come up with optimal strategies based on their particular circumstances.
